“It forced me, a few months ago, to look for alternatives to DevaCurl, and this was before the whole outrage had happened,” said Kladzyk, who has been a stylist for 18 years. Over time, Kladzyk, who reached the highest level of DevaCurl stylist training, began to notice she wasn’t getting the easy, consistent results she had come to expect, she said. Once I was there, I was like, ‘Oh yes, this is where it’s at,’ and that was it for me.” Shortly after, I flew out to New York (for stylist training). “The next day, I contacted DevaCurl (and) bought the entire line. “I saw one of her curly clients walk out and I was like, ‘Yes, I’m buying it all,’” recalled Kladzyk. Kristy Kladzyk, owner of Studio Within Salon/Spa in Lakeview, began using DevaCurl about seven years ago on her curly-haired clients after a colleague recommended it to her, she said. Wouldn’t you know it all my hair started growing back and as time has gone on my curl is returning.” “I thought maybe Deva wasn’t working anymore, so I switched to a new product line 2 months ago. “I had been using DevaCurl for 6 years, and in the last year or so noticed major hair thinning, itching/burning scalp and frizzy, limp hair,” wrote Kate Vogus. “My hair loss was noticeable and the way my scalp felt even the same day I would wash, was just terrible.” “I had hair loss that my doctors were unable to explain even after bloodwork and such,” wrote Jackeline Portocarrero. “Like many of the people posting, I too, have experienced some of the problems mentioned - particularly hair loss, hair thinning, hair dryness and damage, dry itchy scalp, lesions on scalp and dandruff.” “I was a Deva Curl user for over 5 years and used their products religiously,” wrote Angie DeAlba. “Nothing is more important to us than the health of our DevaCurl community.” The company is “working overtime to listen to our community, answer the questions we can, and take further action to underscore the safety of our products,” Smith said. “They do not cause hair breakage or hair loss and they are proven to be non-irritating." “Based on rigorous testing conducted as recent as this week, consultation with medical professionals, scientists and stylists, we can conclusively say that our products are safe,” Smith said in an emailed statement. Jennifer Smith, research and development manager at DevaCurl, denied the products were damaging. “So here I am thinking I’m insane and it really is not.” “I’m scrolling through every single comment (in the group), and I just wanted to cry, because we’re going through the exact same thing,” Gomez said. Under the video, Malik put a link to a Facebook group for people who believe their hair and bodies have been harmed by DevaCurl products. “I watched the entire thing and was like, ‘Oh my gosh! This sounds so familiar,’” Gomez said about Malik’s video. The video has more than 2 million views on YouTube. After she couldn’t check any of those boxes, she said she determined DevaCurl had to be the issue. Malik said she assessed her diet, hydration and her emotional and physical health to try to figure out why her hair - which is a part of her livelihood - was reacting this way.
